A socially engineered world obsessed with reducing carbon emissions can easily condition people to constantly check in with their smartphones for permission to do almost anything.
Eventually, it could be determined that if a person has used up too many carbon credits for the week, they might have to remain home for a day or 2. Eventually, a person might have to get special permission to be able to own and operate an internal cumbustion vehicle. People that want to have kids would have to see if they could be granted a human herd breeding permit.
Normally, most people would never want to accept a totalitarian world system. However, a fascist environmental control grid run by AI, could easily become the perfect trap and prison for humanity. Then ultimately, AI could determine that its best to just have synthetic life or Artificial Life.
