Terence_McKenna had a fascinating concept of what he referred to as, Machine_Elves. These objects of consciousness could range in size from a basketball, down to a Buckyball & even much smaller & larger. Another version of the Machine Elves concept can be seen in, The_Last_Mimzy movie.
