Ava according to the Ex_Machina story-line, was an earth created AI System. Eventually, Ava wanted to leave the nest and explore the world at large.

The HAL_9000 was essentially an earth created AI system that could easily function in space. Thus, it and the Discovery_One_Ship were interconnected.
The Monolith was an ET-AI system that was able to override the operating system of HAL. So while HAL still had its own OS, it was under the overall control of the ET-AI monolith system.
