It's a new take on the modern concept of remote control.

As_We_May_Think was a future projection of technology from a 1945 perspective. Notice the (unintentional) 3rd eye symbolism.

What would happen if most of civilizations could conjure up or 3D print and move things with the power of their mind?

A little over a decade after AS WE MAY THINK was published, the movie Forbidden_Planet was released. Although no direct reference to 3D printed matter technology is made, a subterranean machine and or supercomputer is able to manufacture monsters from the_Id & just about anything else. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forbidden_Planet#Plot

"Gabriel Vaughn is a high-tech intelligence operative enhanced with a super-computer microchip in his brain. With this implant, Gabriel is the first human ever to be connected directly into the globalized information grid."

The character, Gabriel Vaughn wasn't crippled, he was just enhanced with a digital interface implant.

There is the very low budget TV movie, Exo-Man from 1977 about a crippled man in a strong suit. The movie was never developed into a TV series.

M.A.N.T.I.S. did become a TV series, albeit for just one season. It was on a much higher budget than Exo-Man.

Of course when the Iron_Man movies went into production, it was always on a big budget.
