"McBain at this point has realized the nature of his own reality, and jokingly asks Jane, "So, is somebody going to unplug me now?" She answers "no", so McBain follows with the request "Look, do me a favor, when you get back to wherever it is you come from, just leave us the hell alone down here, okay?"
David's death as Hall in the 1990s simulation allows Hall's artificial consciousness to take control of David's body in the real world. He wakes in 2024, connected to a VR system. He disconnects the system and finds Jane and her father, the real Hannon Fuller. Jane wants to tell Hall more about the simulation, but as she begins the film ends, the screen image collapsing to a thin line of light before going dark like a computer monitor being turned off." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thirteenth_Floor#Plot
At the end of The 13th Floor movie, was it merely artificial consciousness or a digital copy of the original? In the movie Source Code, the actual persons consciousness is transmitted into another timeline.
About half a year after the release of The 13th Floor and The Matrix, construction commenced on The Earth Simulator.
"Construction started in October 1999, and the site officially opened on 11 March 2002." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_Simulator (TES)
However, TES wasn't meant to simply be a giant video-game console.
Unlike the ending of the Source_Code movie, the technology doesn't exist yet to transmit a persons consciousness into an alternate time-line.
"Being more sympathetic to his plight, Goodwin sends Stevens back one last time and promises to disconnect his life support after eight minutes. This time, he sets a date with Christina, defuses the bomb, apprehends Frost, and reports him to the police. He calls his father under the guise of a fellow soldier and reconciles with him, and sends Goodwin an email. After eight minutes, Goodwin terminates Stevens' life support.
As the world around him continues to progress beyond eight minutes, Stevens confirms his suspicion that Source Code is not merely a simulation, but rather a machine that allows him to create alternate timelines. Christina and he leave the train and go on a date. In the same (alternate) reality, Goodwin receives Stevens' message. He tells her of Source Code's true capability and asks her to help the alternate-reality version of him." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_Code#Plot
