It would be several months before enough computers were added to the network to make it useful and for messages to start flowing among them, but September 2, 1969, is generally considered one of the defining dates in the Internet's protracted birth.
Within a year, the network would expand from a few west coast colleges to the eastern seaboard, and by the mid-'70s the network had gone international, with satellite links to Europe and dozens of computers connected to the new grid. (See the photo above for what things looked like in 1977.) And with email (1971) and file transfer (1973) features added to the system, it actually became useful for getting actual work and communications done.
By 1983, the ARPAnet shifted to a new architecture for data transmission, the one which is still in use today. By 1988, everything made another huge change, as commercial interests were allowed to piggyback on what had formerly been a government- and education-only network. Called "Internet Commercial" for a short time before becoming just "The Internet," I vividly remember my COBOL professor back in the day just gushing over what possibilities would be opened up when that happened, and he was right. Once the World Wide Web got started, along with the Mosaic web browser, the net as you and I know it really got kicking.
But the wild world of Yahoo!, YouTube, Google, and ICanHasCheezburger all started with that humble connection 40 years ago, a wire hooking two computers in different locations together and scientists figuring out a way to make them do something useful together instead of on their own, as had long been the usual way things were done.

The AI Global Data SYSTEM...

Larry_Page was able to create an algorithm to locate & track each web page within & beyond each website. Who else but someone named Larry would have created the PageRank? The business of information gathering & data mining has been around in one for or another for quite a while. There are always concerns that when tremendous pools of data are collected, who all can gain access to it? And for what reason or purpose? Also lots of websites & blogs just like to provide links to various sites for reference. The search engines are always in the background recording everything on line. Eventually there will be A.I. search engines that can link up to any computer or robot that's receiving data from the Web.
Glen_A._Larson provided an interesting depiction of what a future personal A.I. search engine might be like way back in 1982. By 2012 the concept of people having a personal computer is as commonplace as having their personal car. Indeed, some folks have more than one of each. But the A.I. KITT that was depicted in 1982 is still a ways off from 2012. KITT like HAL was basically an A.I. on board_computer for the ship or vehicle. However, a computer for the whole ship in effect, makes the vehicle the equivalent of a robotic vessel. So eventually a lot of people might have their own A.I. Web_browser that talks to them, through their phone, computer & car, if you have the money to buy those toys.

Of course there are several ancient forms of recording data as well.
There is even the ancient concept of the Akashic Record (AR) of everything. Eventually quantum supercomputers with holographic-data-storage & memory-crystals will essentially be able to record everything on earth. Combine that with all the databases & VR programs & you start to realize that modern technology is trying to mimic the AR. However, the concept of the AR is beyond things like greed & war & the suppression of true knowledge. Any advanced VR program can be run by any corporation or government with its own agenda. So unless people can truly be allowed to openly share & compare information, someone with their own agenda can still control things to their own advantage.

Scientists Claim New State of Matter Created

{Scientists claim to have created a form of aluminum that's nearly transparent to extreme ultraviolet radiation and which is a new state of matter.
It's an idea straight out of science fiction, featured in the movie "Star Trek IV."
The work is detailed in the journal Nature Physics.
The normal states of matter are solid, liquid and gas, and a fourth state, called plasma, is a superheated gas considered more exotic. Other experiments have created strange states of matter for brief periods. This one, too, existed only briefly.
To create the new, even more exotic stuff, a short pulse from a laser "knocked out" a core electron from every aluminum atom in a sample without disrupting the metal's crystalline structure, the researchers explain.
''What we have created is a completely new state of matter nobody has seen before," said professor Justin Wark of Oxford University's Department of Physics.
"Transparent aluminum is just the start," Wark said. "The physical properties of the matter we are creating are relevant to the conditions inside large planets, and we also hope that by studying it we can gain a greater understanding of what is going on during the creation of 'miniature stars' created by high-power laser implosions, which may one day allow the power of nuclear fusion to be harnessed here on Earth."
Fusion is a dream of scientists who would create cheap and plentiful power by fusing atoms together, as opposed to nuclear fission that generates electricity today.
The discovery was made possible with a high-powered synchrotron radiation generator called the FLASH laser, based in Hamburg, Germany. It produces extremely brief pulses of soft X-ray light, each of which is more powerful than the output of a power plant that provides electricity to a whole city.
The Oxford team, along with their international colleagues, focused all this power down into a spot with a diameter less than a twentieth of the width of a human hair. At such high intensities the aluminum turned transparent.
While the invisible effect lasted for only an extremely brief period - an estimated 40 femtoseconds - it demonstrates that such an exotic state of matter can be created using very high power X-ray sources.
"What is particularly remarkable about our experiment is that we have turned ordinary aluminum into this exotic new material in a single step by using this very powerful laser," Wark said. "For a brief period the sample looks and behaves in every way like a new form of matter. In certain respects, the way it reacts is as though we had changed every aluminum atom into silicon: it's almost as surprising as finding that you can turn lead into gold with light."}

Hackers: can now steal data via electrical outlet

{A few years ago, the idea of using nothing more than a standard electrical outlet to hack into sensitive computer systems would be the stuff of Hollywood -- and far-fetched, eye-rolling Hollywood at that.
I can almost picture the scene: A wily Justin Long taps a few keys on his laptop and we watch the signal race through the power grid to his target, where a hapless government employee types his password into the ultra-secure computer at headquarters. Back with Long, we watch the password show up on his computer screen, as if by magic, thanks to his nifty hacking skills.
It sounds ridiculous.
But it turns out, well, it's basically a reality.
At the Black Hat USA conference later this month, hackers are preparing to unveil their methodology to steal information typed on a computer keyboard using nothing more than the power outlet to which the computer is connected.
The technique behind the exploit isn't as wildly high-tech as you might think, though. Old-fashioned electrical properties are the key to the trick. Here's how it works (in simple terms): When you type on a standard computer keyboard, electrical signals run through the cable to the PC. Those cables aren't shielded, so the signal leaks via the ground wire in the cable and into the ground wire on the computer's power supply.
The attacker connects a probe to a nearby power socket (perhaps in the vacant office next door or a hotel room across the hall), detects the ground leakage, and converts the signal back into alphanumeric characters. So far, the attack has proven successful using outlets up to about 15 meters away.
If you've got a wireless keyboard or are working on a laptop unplugged from the wall, which would make this attack useless, fret not: The hackers have a method for eavesdropping on you too. A simple laser beam -- better than a laser pointer, but not by much -- can be pointed a shiny object on the table where the computer sits, and the beam's reflection is captured by a receiving system. The vibration of that reflection caused by the striking of keys can be analyzed and, as with the electrical outlet system described above, reconstructed into words, since every key produces a unique vibration pattern. All this technique requires is a direct line of sight to the PC and a few hundred dollars worth of equipment.

Lockheed Martin Biometric Card Scanning Service Contract
{Rockville, Md., June 22nd, 2009 -- The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has awarded Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] a five-year, $47 million contract to continue managing the FBI Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division’s Card Scanning Service (CSS) program. The contract covers the conversion of paper fingerprint, palm print and photo records into high-quality electronic records for the FBI.
Records processed through this program are submitted by state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies and used to populate the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS) database, a national fingerprint and criminal history system maintained by the FBI CJIS Division. With this new contract, the FBI will also be able to automatically process paper fingerprint records submitted by foreign law enforcement agencies.
“We’re proud to continue our decade-long partnership with the FBI on the Card Scanning Service program,” said Barbara Humpton, vice president, Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Services. “Having secure, accessible records is a vital element in the Bureau’s ability to take quick and decisive actions for citizen safety. This new system will significantly improve how the FBI accesses traditional fingerprints as well as palm print and photo records.”
"This card scanning service contract will aid the FBI in establishing a more complete and up-to-date criminal history record in support of law enforcement and criminal justice efforts, while creating employment opportunities in West Virginia," added FBI CJIS Division Acting Assistant Director Jerome M. Pender.
Operations for the program will take place primarily in Fairmont, WV, with support from several small business partners across the country, including West Virginia-based IMTS; Communications Resource, Incorporated (CRI), a woman-owned small disadvantaged business located in McLean, Va.; Massachusetts-based Aware, Inc.; and BancTec, headquartered in Dallas, TX.
Eventually, the records processed through the CSS program will populate the FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI) program. NGI will further advance the FBI’s biometric identification services, providing an incremental replacement of current IAFIS technical capabilities while also introducing new functionality. Lockheed Martin is the lead industry partner on the NGI program.

Nokia and Tesla...
Prototype Nokia phone recharges without wires

And while early lab experiments have been able to "beam" electricity a few feet to power a light bulb, the day when our laptops and cell phones can charge without having to plug them in to a wall socket still seems decades in the future.
Nokia, however, has taken another baby step in that direction with the invention of a cell phone that recharges itself using a unique system: It harvests ambient radio waves from the air, and turns that energy into usable power. Enough, at least, to keep a cell phone from running out of juice.
While "traditional" (if there is such a thing) wireless power systems are specifically designed with a transmitter and receiver in mind, Nokia's system isn't finicky about where it gets its wireless waves. TV, radio, other mobile phone systems -- all of this stuff just bounces around the air and most of it is wasted, absorbed into the environment or scattered into the ether. Nokia picks up all the bits and pieces of these waves and uses the collected electromagnetic energy to create electrical current, then uses that to recharge the phone's battery. A huge range of frequencies can be utilized by the system (there's no other way, really, as the energy in any given wave is infinitesimal). It's the same idea that Tesla was exploring 100 years ago, just on a tiny scale.
Mind you, harvesting ambient electromagnetic energy is never going to offer enough electricity to power your whole house or office, but it just might be enough to keep a cell phone alive and kicking. Currently Nokia is able to harvest all of 5 milliwatts from the air; the goal is to increase that to 20 milliwatts in the short term and 50 milliwatts down the line. That wouldn't be enough to keep the phone alive during an active call, but would be enough to slowly recharge the cell phone battery while it's in standby mode, theoretically offering infinite power -- provided you're not stuck deep underground where radio waves can't penetrate.
Nokia says it hopes to commercialize the technology in three to five years."}

"I'd never seen anything like it in my life," the Washington lawyer said. "They were large for dragonflies. I thought, 'Is that mechanical, or is that alive?' "
That is just one of the questions hovering over a handful of similar sightings at political events in Washington and New York. Some suspect the insect like drones are high-tech surveillance tools, perhaps deployed by the Department of Homeland Security.
Others think they are, well, dragonflies -- an ancient order of insects that even biologists concede look about as robotic as a living creature can look.
No agency admits to having deployed insect-size spy drones. But a number of U.S. government and private entities acknowledge they are trying. Some federally funded teams are even growing live insects with computer chips in them, with the goal of mounting spyware on their bodies and controlling their flight muscles remotely.}
