The technology to transfer consciousness into something like a very advanced version of The_Sims & other Avatars, is still a Sci-Fi concept. In The_Matrix world, ones consciousness is only linked to a VR character. However, it is implied that if a sudden disconnect with The_Matrix occurs, there would be dire consequences. 

Of course back in the early days when people were first exposed to the SimCity game, the tech and the graphics were quite limited. Yet, something very interesting was started. All you needed was a personal_computer to experience this new digital or Virtual_World. However, any kind of full immersion or consciousness transfer was just Sci-Fi entertainment.

There was quite a big jump from the SimCity_(1989_video_game) to The_Matrix movie in 1999. The brilliant creators of The_Matrix_(franchise) wanted to depict a warning about, Out_of_Control A.I. run scenarios, where humans are mentally trapped in a simulated environment with various levels and versions. A small group of people try to break others out of the A.I. run simulation and only one human city remains in the "Real_World."

The_Thirteenth_Floor (1999) provided another fascinating version of  a VR program with people being in something like a very advanced form of SimCity.

The Story of Mankind, VR, ETc.

The_Story_of_Mankind is a cautionary movie from 1957.

What happens when Digital People Populate the Metaverse?

The Metaverse is an interactive digital playground. If you are essentially interacting with cartoon avatar characters, then you know that you are just temporarily interacting with something in between the environment of a game or a simulation.

However, if you are temporarily mentally merged into something like the MATRIX or the 13th Floor, but without any awareness of the "real world", then that photo-realistic or interactive simulation will be your only frame of reference. Thus, you had better set the VR timer for only 1 or 2 hours. If it's more than a few hours, you might start to get hungry or have to go to the bathroom...

Of course if you have this all taken care of because you are in a full immersion pod, then you are already in your own version of the MATRIX.

In the first Avatar movie, people got to see a depiction of how a person was linked to a modified version of themselves adapted to look like humanoid beings on another planet. You are still you, but you have this full immersion haptic bodysuit, grown to just the right specifications. 

How Does the concept of Quantum Leap work? The time traveler temporarily takes over the body of a person in their past. The person's body in the past temporarily becomes a haptic suit for the time traveler. The original version of QL could have made this more easy to understand, but the general premise was there.

If time travel could ever be proven to be possible, would that imply that this world is part of a cosmic interactive recording and projection? IE, a simulation of sorts.

What happens if a dangerous sentient digital character gets out into the real world? That's the premise of the 1995 movie Virtuosity.

The_Thirteenth_Floor is still a very good depiction of linking to a full immersion VR system. So much so that if you didn't realize that you are linked to a temporary sensory reality, you might actually think that you are in the real world. There is a timer that is set for a couple of hours so that a person won't starve to death and can return do some other "real world" things. Of course the ending of the movie implies that this world might be part of someones VR movie or Metaverse.
