The Katy Freeway, The widest highway in the world, 26 lanes in Houston, Texas

 https://www.reddit.com/r/texas/comments/1nt3agp/the_katy_freeway_the_widest_highway_in_the_world/

As a major seaport region and overall big business center, Houston has to accommodate a tremendous amount of vehicles.

https://www.facebook.com/unboxfactory/videos/texas-katy-freeway-boasts-26-lanes-and-handles-about-220000-vehicles-every-day-t/864115019920783/

https://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/article/it-s-not-just-you-the-katy-freeway-is-15945843.php With all that extra space there could easily be 2 BRT lanes, 2 truck lanes, as well as 2 HOV-express bus lanes. https://websiteprod.ridemetro.org/riding-metro/hov-hot-express-lanes

https://www.houstontx.gov/planning/nhhip/docs_pdfs/Traffic/10%20Katy%20Freeway%20HOV.pdf

https://www.texasfreeway.com/houston/i10west A 10-12 lane freeway is pretty wide, but 20-26 lanes is gigantic. At a certain point like 30 lanes would just get ridicules. Two commuter train tracks, 2 LRT tracks, 2 BRT lanes, 2 express lanes, 2 HOV-express bus lanes would move a lot more people than a 30 lane highway.

Induced_demand, or simply adding a lot more lanes for single vehicle occupancy doesn't necessary improve things in the long run. Unless a major highway has enough space for parallel rail and bus, its just a matter of time until the road reaches maximum capacity.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Induced_demand#Definitions

https://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/transportation/2025/10/06/532681/stretch-of-i-10-katy-freeway-to-be-reduced-to-two-lanes-until-mid-2026/ It was almost as if some people from Vancouver, Canada tried to convince Houston to just have 2 wagon roads in 2026. However, this was totally a TX initiative with no influence from BC.

While Texas has had a THINK BIG mentality for generations, at the other end of the spectrum is backwater BC in Canada. The Greater Vancouver Region has continually stunted or thwarted itself, due to several imposed restrictions.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lions_Gate_Bridge Only 3 lanes wide with no plans to build a parallel double track LRT tunnel and a 2 lane BRT tunnel. The very narrow Lions_Gate_Bridge wasn't designed to eventually have another deck for express bus traffic. Its one of the worst bottleneck-chokepoints in the world.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Massey_Tunnel Originally designed to only have 2 lanes each way. No future space for bus and truck lanes, despite being in a major seaport region.

https://www.highway99tunnel.ca While the 2030s tunnel will have 4 lanes each way, there is no provision for an LRT section. The new tunnel should have been designed to have enough width to eventually accommodate a 5th lane each way. Then there still could have been 3 general lanes each way, plus an express bus-HOV lane each way. Then, the 5th lane each way for BRT that could eventually be upgraded to LRT.

https://im.rediff.com/money/2012/aug/30high7.jpg Boston has 5 lanes each way. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Dig#Final_phases

Seattle in June

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/seattle/98104/june-weather/351409 Wow, Seattle actually got to have 18 June days that were at least 70F. That's pretty bad that barely half of June got above 70F. Only 8 days in June reached or exceeded 80F. That's pretty sad to barely have just over a quarter of June in the 80s. However, only 6 days in June were at least 30C or 86F.

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/anchorage/99501/june-weather/346835 At least Seattle was warmer than Anchorage, Alaska today.

Seattle usually has significantly hotter summer days than Vancouver, BC (V-BC).

https://www.extremeweatherwatch.com/compare-cities/vancouver/seattle

https://www.globe-gazers.com/vancouver-vs-seattle If you think that Seattle has too much rain, you will find it even more unpleasantly damp in V-BC.

Vancouver and Victoria, BC having some cold weather nights

https://www.accuweather.com/en/ca/vancouver/v6c/june-weather/53286 Well, it looks like Vancouver, BC will have had 20 June days above 20C. Only 10 of those days were over 25C and there were only 2 days that were at least 30C of 86F. That's hardly a June heatwave, but perhaps it is when compared to Alaska and Siberia.

https://weather.gc.ca/data/wxoimages/wocanmap0_e.jpg Yellowknife and Ottawa reached 30C today, but not even close to that in Vancouver and Victoria. https://weather.gc.ca/canada_e.html

Transit fare hike hits Ottawa on New Year’s Day

 https://ottawa.citynews.ca/2024/01/01/transit-fare-hike-hits-ottawa-on-new-years-day

https://ottawa.citynews.ca/2024/01/01/i-am-done-amid-rider-woes-is-ottawas-transit-system-a-victim-of-its-own-success

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O-Train#Overview Of course the O-Train should eventually be all double tracked. The underbuilt Canada_Line in Richmond-BC still has some single track sections. Unfortunately, The-Canada-Line wasn't designed to eventually have 152m stations, like the Montreal Metro. Thus, the 3rd SkyTrain line is only capable of having 50m stations.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transitway_(Ottawa)#Routes

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transitway_(Ottawa)#Stations_and_segments

While Ottawa has some wide bridges, Greater Vancouver has several narrow bridges. Thus, GV will eventually have to build a network of bus bridges. Otherwise, the region's existing bridges will just get even more congested.

A 4.5-magnitude earthquake felt in Greater Victoria, BC 103.64 m (340.0 ft)

 https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/earthquake-greater-victoria-1.6990956

Victoria,_British_Columbia (V-BC) has some of the shortest buildings of any major city in Canada. V-BC is just a backwater provincial capital, whereas Melbourne, Vic. is a mighty state capital.

The city seems bent towards never allowing a 30 story residential building anywhere in Victoria. The tallest office building isn't even 15 stories.

"The project was initially discussed as a 29- or 30-storey building. In the fall, Townline said it would go with a slightly shorter building after finding some resistance at city hall." https://www.timescolonist.com/real-estate-news/victorias-tallest-building-at-26-storeys-gets-approval-4661187

https://www.timescolonist.com/local-news/45-earthquake-shakes-greater-victoria-washington-state-coast-on-sunday-night-7658398 Perhaps this will help BC with another excuse to keep Victoria as a provincial backwater.

https://www.cgenarchive.org/victoria-earthquakes.html

https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/bc-earthquake-victoria-washington

https://vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca/small-earthquake-near-victoria-lightly-felt-by-residents-1.6325972

A stump building in Seattle or Melbourne would be a tower in Victoria, BC. So far, no building on Vancouver Island is allowed to be as tall as the Old_City_Hall_in_Toronto at 103.64 m (340.0 ft). Old_City_Hall_(Toronto) is still a grand building, but its become a stump in TO over the past several decades.

No building in V-BC is allowed to attain or rival the height of St_Paul's_Cathedral,_Melbourne.

"Once the central spire, named the Moorhouse Spire, was completed to its full height of 312 ft (95m),[5] St Paul's became the tallest structure in central Melbourne and dominated the city's skyline when viewed from the south." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Paul's_Cathedral,_Melbourne#20th_and_21st_centuries

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/may/29/melbourne-earthquake-how-common-are-tremors-in-victoria-and-could-a-very-large-one-occur

Unlike the state of Victoria and Washington State, backwater BC will use any excuse to hold back its urban scale and its infrastructure. It seems that by the time electric power was installed in Toronto, TO was never going back to just being another provincial backwater city.

Wellington,_NZ is just as scenic as V-BC if not moreso, but it allows for some taller buildings and is also in an earthquake zone. The Vancouver_Island part of backwater BC should have had a modern train like this by now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_Wellington_suburban

Apparently, V-BC is to never allow anything to rival the tallest buildings in Wellington, Ottawa-Gatineau, Halifax, Quebec_City, Winnipeg & Edmonton. Just barely taller than Regina,_Saskatchewan.

DIFC’s first residential project ‘DIFC Living’

"The 186-metre tower of 41 storeys will have more than 170 upscale residences and 9 storeys of commercial space in addition to high-end F&B offerings"  https://www.constructionweekonline.com/projects-tenders/difcs-first-residential-project-difc-living-now-open-for-sale

A 186m or 610 foot building in Vancouver, BC would be the 3rd tallest within its small city limits. Yet, in Dubai it's just another stump building. A 186m tower surpasses any building in the cities of Rio_de_Janeiro, San_Diego, Honolulu, Cape_Town & Wellington.

The World’s Most Congested Cities, Roads and Bridges...

 https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-01-10/these-are-the-world-s-most-congested-cities

Overall, trains can move people and goods more efficiently. Then busses and trucks, but there still needs to be a good road network as well.

https://bc.ctvnews.ca/metro-vancouver-has-some-of-the-worst-traffic-in-north-america-study-finds-1.6286875

There has been a tremendous level of reluctance to build a series of HOV, bus & bike bridges in the Greater Vancouver region.

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/metro-vancouver-traffic-second-worst-north-america

This combined with such a narrow road network helps to make sure that Vancouver continues to be one of the most congested cities in the developed world.

Urban Bus and Bike Lanes and Bridges

Bus_lanes can add so much more capacity to streets and roads.

https://academic-accelerator.com/encyclopedia/high-occupancy-vehicle-lane

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bus_lanes_in_New_York_City

Select_Bus_Service, because it and a subway line can provide a mutual benefit. Plus, it's easier & cheaper to set up a rapid bus corridor until a new subway line is essential.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G_Line_(Los_Angeles_Metro)#Conversion_to_light_rail

Greater Vancouver has been too slow or even too reluctant to build a series of bus & bike bridges.

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/r2-rapidbus-marine-drive-north-shore-bus-lane-construction

Keeping bridges, streets & roads so narrow makes it difficult to put in proper bus lanes.

https://www.burnabynow.com/local-news/growing-traffic-congestion-increases-bus-delays-in-metro-vancouver-region-6662394

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/metro-vancouver-traffic-second-worst-north-america

So many other cities are able to do so much more, simply because they aren't limited by a Vancouver or BC type of mentality.

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/translink-transport-2050-10-year-priorities-plan-projects-brt

The Tilikum_Crossing in Portland is the type of cool transit bridge that should also be in Vancouver, BC. Unfortunately, V, BC is too afraid to build more bridges.

https://trimet.org/tilikum It's no problem to have such a wonderful bridge like this in Oregon, but in BC its not allowed to be a reality. https://trimet.org/tilikum/#about Such transit bridges actually help other regional bridges.

Some Wide Bridges and High Volume Crossings in the World

https://bridgemastersinc.com/record-setting-bridges-across-the-globe

https://www.axiomint.com/built-wide-bridge-across-the-great-divide

Cairo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_El_Farag_Axis_Bridge Has 12 lanes. https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2019/6/egypts-new-bridge-becomes-the-widest-cable-stayed-bridge-580736

Brisbane: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Leo_Hielscher_Bridges They provide a 12 lane crossing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington_Bridge It has 14 lanes. https://www.panynj.gov/bridges-tunnels/en/george-washington-bridge/history.html

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verrazzano-Narrows_Bridge It has 13 lanes. https://www.nydailynews.com/2015/10/06/bike-lanes-eyed-in-400m-overhaul-of-verrazano-bridge/

Since the early 1970s, the 10 lane San_Francisco-Oakland_Bay_Bridge is augmented in a way, by the Transbay_Tube. Indeed, 10 car BART trains cross the San_Francisco_Bay. Unfortunately, the BART tube wasn't designed to have a provision for a 3rd or 4th set of train tracks, so capacity is limited.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_span_replacement_of_the_San_Francisco-Oakland_Bay_Bridge Unfortunately, the Bay Bridge doesn't have anything like Sydney_Harbour_Bridge_cycleway as of yet.

The Sydney_Harbour_Bridge has 8 lanes and 2 tracks of the North_Shore_railway_line. The Harbour Bridge is augmented by the 4 lane Sydney_Harbour_Tunnel. On the other side of the Harbour Bridge is the Sydney_Metro-tunnel , https://www.sydneymetro.info/article/history-under-sydney-harbour , https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/media/documents/2017/tbm-fatcheet.PDF , https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-04-21/sydney-metro-train-travels-under-harbour/102252872 , https://www.9news.com.au/national/sydney-news-train-goes-under-harbor-bridge-for-the-first-time-in-test/92d0ef56-3032-4416-a653-5b7c67dba002

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Gate_Bridge Has 10 lanes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingston_Bridge,_Glasgow Has 10 lanes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anzac_Bridge Has 8 lanes.

The new Port_Mann_Bridge in Canada was the widest for a little while. However, the bridge should have also had 2 rapidbus lanes and a provision for 2 rail rapid transit tracks. https://www.itsinternational.com/its1/feature/widest-bridge-world-port-mann-open-vancouver

The George_Massey_Tunnel was built to classic backward BC standards with only 4 lanes and no bus lanes and no breakdown lanes. While its replacement will have 8 lanes, there is no provision for rapid_transit. No emergency lanes and no provision for extra HOV & bus lanes. https://biv.com/article/2023/06/bc-starts-bid-process-41b-massey-traffic-tunnel

These 3 fine crossings were possible, simply because they aren't under any Vancouver, BC type restrictions and limitations.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narrows_Bridge_(Perth) ,WA: Has 10 lanes and 2 train tracks.

Seattle, WA: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_90_floating_bridges An 8 lane crossing with 2 train tracks.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champlain_Bridge_(Montreal,_2019-present), Quebec: It has 8 lanes and 2 train tracks. Stubborn BC will likely continue to not follow the examples of WA & Q.

At the other end of the spectrum is the inept, 3 lane Lions_Gate_Bridge. It just might be the best example of bottleneck planning on the planet. The Lions-Gate-Bridge is too narrow and flimsy to accomodate 2 bus lanes, especially any trains. Unlike Sydney, SF & Montreal in the 1930s, Vancouver was just a provincial backwater. Thus, the Lions_Gate_Bridge opened with just 2 lanes. A bridge so narrow that some living rooms and swimming pools are wider than it. The 3rd lane was squeezed in during the early 1950s. The Lions_Gate_Bridge would be fantastic as a bus, bike and pedestrian crossing. However, an 8 lane tunnel with a provision for a train line, should be built from the North_Shore to Georgia_Street. The section of Georgia-Street that's closest to Stanley_Park is 7 lanes wide. However, unlike most major cities, Vancouver deliberately keeps falling behind, because congestive or stunted planning is the way to go.

Fortunately, the Vancouverism mentality didn't stop the Narrows_Bridge_in_Perth or Seattle's upgraded Interstate_90_floating_bridges and especially, the Champlain_Bridge_in_Montreal. (WA & Q)

A bus crashes with a semi in Manitoba

  https://winnipegsun.com/news/provincial/at-least-10-killed-in-crash-on-trans-canada-highway-in-western-manitoba-report

In canada, several highway intersections still don't have overpasses and have traffic lights instead. At-grade intersections, especially on the Trans-Canada Highway, should be brought up to proper freeway standards.

A divided highway can be a little safer than one that isn't.

Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing in Vancouver, BC

The Ironworkers_Memorial_Second_Narrows_Crossing or bridge, had a chance to be designed to be bigger and better in 1958. Unfortunately, it's just a 6 lane bridge, like the old Champlain_Bridge_(Montreal).

Either a new transit bridge with 2 rail rapid transit tracks and 2 bus & 2 HOV lanes should be built beside it, or something like the new Champlain_Bridge_(Montreal).

The Sydney_Harbour_Bridge has 8 lanes, 2 tracks, bike and foot paths.
