The Crystal Ball and The Magic Mirror
Since ancient times, some people have described or wrote about the concept of a crystal ball or sphere that could show 3D images. These images could be of things & events at various points in time.
http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Crystal_ball
Quantum Bloch_sphere Terminology
Long before most humans could ever imagine the science required to develop TV & 3D imaging systems & Quantum computing, there was the concept of the crystal ball & the talking magic mirror.
http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2010/03/moving-beyond-silicon-to-break-the-megahertz-barrier.ars
Eventually inventors & technicians were able to create such things with modern technology.
The Oracle is an ancient concept but it has continued into modern times. The work of John_von_Neumann was an integral part of the ORACLE (computer) project at the Oak_Ridge_National_Laboratory.
-
By the mid 1950s, Philip_K._Dick had realized that special future computers & certain precognition people could tap into various timelines. So in a way, even in ancient times, some people had the idea that holograms could be seen in things like crystalballs. An advanced quantum-computer might be able to tap into specific points & places in time & space. http://www.theuniversesolved.com/theuniversesolved/blog/post/2009/05/Non-locality-Explained!.aspx
So whether its a crystal ball (spherical TV) or a talking magic+mirror, flat screen TV or tablet PC, its modern technology that's based on ancient ideas in the mind.
-
The concept of the Oracle & the_crystal_ball have become a modern Metaphor for future & past events stored in time.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/arts/when-the-crystal-ball-foretells-a-bumpy-ride/article1513523
-
But if too many people start to metaphorically perceive the universe as a vast interactive recording, there would be a lot more people questioning reality.

The Limitations of Bulky Desk Top Computers
A cell-phone is essentially a pocket size pc/laptop, but its also still good to have a laptop or desktop computer.
http://www.siliconrepublic.com/news/article/15446/business/in-three-years-desktops-will-be-irrelevant-google-sales-chief, http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=1278413
Portable computers & other Wi-Fi devices just don't have the limitations of a desktop computer.
Its just that more people will want to link their smartphone to their tablet, laptop or desktop.

At the other end of the spectrum some people just want to have a basic cellphone. Then they don't have to pay extra for a data plan or for using extra minutes. More of their money can go towards a laptop or desktop computer.

Mark_Zuckerberg like Bill_Gates, dropped out of Harvard and also became very successful in the corporate $Y$TEM.
He certainly has created quite a popular data sharing tool for the general public to use & enjoy. All that's required is that people continue to post more of their personal information on line.
One should always be cautious about how much of their information they want out in the open.

The Etch A Sketch Pad
Just another sci-fi TV prop of a data PAD, or a depiction of future technology based on an ancient concept.
By the late 1960s more people were starting to think about the potential of an electronic sketch & note PAD.
By the late 1970s several key people were realizing the burgeoning technological gateways & Jobs that would be created well into the next millennium.
By the early 1990s, the Internet allowed the World_Wide_Web to really take off.
By 2010 more people started to think about the possibilities of texting, doodling or doing some serious web surfing underwater or in orbit. Although the iPad computer seems like a modern invention, the concept of a talking mirror goes back way into the past.

The 6 Million+Dollar+Man had such a cool opening by showing what had happened to the Steve_Austin_character.

The Axis Mundi Tree in Avatar
You can find symbolism in almost anything.
"also cosmic axis, world axis, world pillar..."
Axis_mundi#Modern_Storytelling
In Avatar, an axis mundi tree is destroyed by a joint corporate-military force. The huge towering tree is brought down into total destruction & ash, on the scale of a typical Sci-Fi war movie, but with spectacular CGI. http://www.intuitor.com/moviephysics/Avatar.htm http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499549/goofs Of course even the best movies can have a few glitches or mistakes.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axis_mundi#Modern_expressions
Since Avatar is in 3D as well as its 2D version, more older movies will likely be offered in a 3D version.

Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology & Inventions
By the early 1950s, some people were starting to realize that their house could become their base technology & neat gadgets. The late 1950s was a time when wiring that was as thin as a blade of grass was considered small. Just in time for the dawn of the 1960s, Richard Feynman informed the scientific world of the implications & benefits of Nanotechnology.

Microsoft and Windows
"Allen worked on a simulator for the Altair while Gates developed the interpreter, and it worked flawlessly when they demonstrated it to MITS in March 1975 in Albuquerque, New Mexico."
The Windows, Microsoft_Logo is a little similar to the 4 corner states on a map.
https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-unveils-new-logoheres-a-history-of-the-designs-evolution-2012-8
The Four_Corners area have been a special place for government research, like the IBM_Roadrunner & other corporate entities for the past several decades. Officially, the W7 logo doesn't symbolize the four-coners-of-earth. The 4 corners of a Sphere is an old mystical & religious concept. Even today, not that many people think beyond the parameters of their 3-D world. Thus, so many don't fully realize the implications of an Oracle or a crystal+ball. How did people in ancient times get the idea of seeing 3-D & even 4-D images in a sphere? There was no reference to movies & HDTV back then. Yet, somehow the ancient human mind could ponder the concept of seeing visions inside of an imaging sphere. This W7 logo just happens to look like a crystal ball with a fluctuating 4 Quadrant grid.
{Paul Allen was hired into MITS,[27] and Gates took a leave of absence from Harvard to work with Allen at MITS in Albuquerque in November 1975. They named their partnership "Micro-Soft" and had their first office located in Albuquerque.[27] Within a year, the hyphen was dropped, and on November 26, 1976, the trade name "Microsoft" was registered with the Office of the Secretary of the State of New Mexico.[27] Gates never returned to Harvard to complete his studies.} http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Gates#BASIC

Enemy of the State (1998) movie
"Thomas Reynolds' birth date is given as 9-11-40."
The TV series, Person-of-Interest also has an interesting connection with the #911.
"Gibson traveled to Tokyo in 2001 to prepare for this new novel, which takes place in London, Moscow, and Tokyo.[3] He did not travel to London or Moscow but used interviews with friends and internet resources for research.[4] In September 2001 Gibson had written about 100 pages but was struggling to finish. He stopped writing after watching the September 11, 2001 attacks on television and "realized [the novel] had become a story that took place in an alternate time track, in which Sept. 11 hadn't happened".[1] He considered abandoning the novel but a few weeks later re-wrote portions to use the attacks as a motivating factor for the distress the main character feels.[2] In a 2003 interview he said, "There I was, in the winter of 2001, with no idea what the summer of 2002 was going to be like. ... In the original post-9/11 draft, London felt more like London is feeling right now. Cayce keeps seeing trucks full of soldiers. But I took that out, because as it got closer to the time, it wasn't actually happening."

Apple versus Microsoft
For many, Apple products will always a cut above the rest.
Once the PC market really started to catch on, its popularity propelled it self.
Having a PC at home was even better than having a Mobile_telephone in your Car.
However, some people knew that the dawn of smartphones was just a matter of time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smartphone#Early_smartphones
Is it rivalry, or just two side of the same tech coin?
"The film ends in 1997, with the return of 42-year-old Jobs to Apple (after its acquisition of NeXT Computer) and with his announcement at the MacWorld Expo of an alliance between Apple and Microsoft." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirates_of_Silicon_Valley (1999) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEyrivrjAuU

Several years after people embraced the PC, it was time for the iPhone_(1st_generation).
The summer of 2007 was the dawn of a new era in mobile phone tech.
William_Gibson took the 1980s Sci-Fi tech landscape up to a new level and U2 took music and concerts up to a new level in the 1990s. The last couple decades of the 20th_century took a big leap in technology and Cyberpunk entertainment.
Bill Gates celebrated his 54th birthday in Vancouver at a U2 concert.
It's amazing to see the scale that Seattle is allowed to function on a larger level, simply because it's not bound by any Vancouver type restrictions or limitations.

The Holographic Universe
The_Holographic_Universe has become a way of trying to explain the the universe might be some kind of an interactive recording & projection of time & space.

Digital Streaming far beyond ZOO TV
http://www.wired.com/techbiz/it/magazine/17-10/ff_netflix
Netflix didn't start to provide a streaming_service until 2007. Of course once there is enough bandwidth then it becomes, Internet TV.
U2 released their album, Achtung_Baby in November 1991.
The song, Even_Better_Than_the_Real_Thing was released in June 1992.
The Even_Better_Than_the_Real_Thing#Music_video in February 1992 was a depiction of future digital Zoo of TV and data-streaming on a mass scale. As well as the looming VR Matrix of entertainment and reality.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achtung_Baby#Zoo_TV_Tour Started in February 1992.
"Rehearsals for the tour began in December 1991 at The Factory in Dublin."

History_of_the_Internet#Merging_the_networks_and_creating_the_Internet, the_Internet_goes_global
===============================
By Christopher Null
{Forty years ago today, the first two computers on the ARPAnet -- the military-run precursor to the Internet we know today -- were connected to each each other, creating the first link in what would arguably become the most important technological advance in history.
It would be several months before enough computers were added to the network to make it useful and for messages to start flowing among them, but September 2, 1969, is generally considered one of the defining dates in the Internet's protracted birth.
Within a year, the network would expand from a few west coast colleges to the eastern seaboard, and by the mid-'70s the network had gone international, with satellite links to Europe and dozens of computers connected to the new grid. (See the photo above for what things looked like in 1977.) And with email (1971) and file transfer (1973) features added to the system, it actually became useful for getting actual work and communications done.
By 1983, the ARPAnet shifted to a new architecture for data transmission, the one which is still in use today. By 1988, everything made another huge change, as commercial interests were allowed to piggyback on what had formerly been a government- and education-only network. Called "Internet Commercial" for a short time before becoming just "The Internet," I vividly remember my COBOL professor back in the day just gushing over what possibilities would be opened up when that happened, and he was right. Once the World Wide Web got started, along with the Mosaic web browser, the net as you and I know it really got kicking.
But the wild world of Yahoo!, YouTube, Google, and ICanHasCheezburger all started with that humble connection 40 years ago, a wire hooking two computers in different locations together and scientists figuring out a way to make them do something useful together instead of on their own, as had long been the usual way things were done.
Happy birthday, Internet!}

The AI Global Data SYSTEM...
History of a unique Search_engine with several Special_features.
-
Larry_Page was able to create an algorithm to locate & track each web page within & beyond each website. Who else but someone named Larry would have created the PageRank? The business of information gathering & data mining has been around in one for or another for quite a while. There are always concerns that when tremendous pools of data are collected, who all can gain access to it? And for what reason or purpose? Also lots of websites & blogs just like to provide links to various sites for reference. The search engines are always in the background recording everything on line. Eventually there will be A.I. search engines that can link up to any computer or robot that's receiving data from the Web.
Glen_A._Larson provided an interesting depiction of what a future personal A.I. search engine might be like way back in 1982. By 2012 the concept of people having a personal computer is as commonplace as having their personal car. Indeed, some folks have more than one of each. But the A.I. KITT that was depicted in 1982 is still a ways off from 2012. KITT like HAL was basically an A.I. on board_computer for the ship or vehicle. However, a computer for the whole ship in effect, makes the vehicle the equivalent of a robotic vessel. So eventually a lot of people might have their own A.I. Web_browser that talks to them, through their phone, computer & car, if you have the money to buy those toys.
-
Of course there are several ancient forms of recording data as well.
There is even the ancient concept of the Akashic Record (AR) of everything. Eventually quantum supercomputers with holographic-data-storage & memory-crystals will essentially be able to record everything on earth. Combine that with all the databases & VR programs & you start to realize that modern technology is trying to mimic the AR. However, the concept of the AR is beyond things like greed & war & the suppression of true knowledge. Any advanced VR program can be run by any corporation or government with its own agenda. So unless people can truly be allowed to openly share & compare information, someone with their own agenda can still control things to their own advantage.
Perhaps even the A.I. machine-interface some day. https://www.cyberpunkreview.com/category/rise-of-the-robots
